Topological equivalence

I'm taking Multi, and I don't know why This problem is on my exam.
Can anyone please Guide me through this?
I am familiar with R, R2, and R3. I have no clue what # is. And i'm guessing S is surface ?
Sorry to not give any information or an attempt,
But I don't even know how to start.
I would really appreciate any help a great deal.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Topological equivalence

S = Sphere, S^2 = surface of globe, 2D sphere
# = glueing
