Since am a self learner, I am wondering once someone finishes Rudin's Principles of Real Analysis, how far are they from being able to do research in Analysis? How long does it take from finishing Rudin's book to being at the same level as a college professor?

By the way if anyone who is really into Real Analysis wants to be my friend I am interested. I have a very interesting background.

I would say it takes about 5 to 6 years of intense study to go from "Rudin" (typically used in a Junior or Senior analysis class) to actual research (equivalent to having completed a doctorate). But that would be in a university studying with good teachers. I would consider it almost impossible to do by "self study". Without teachers, you have, especially at the higher levels, no way to correct misunderstandings or even knowing that you are misunderstanding.

I understand what you mean. I am very good at correcting my own mistakes, but I would need someone to look over my proofs.

So Country Boy can't I just use these type of forums to get advice and get my work corrected?
