What does this symbol mean?

I've seen the notation S^1 V S^1 in the context of topology, but I don't know what it means. I know what S^1 is, just not what the symbol V means in this context.

Thanks in advance.

Re: What does this symbol mean?

That is the "wedge sum" (sometimes "wedge product")

It essentially combines the two topological spaces by equating a specific point in one space with a specific point in another. Since S^1 is the circle, S^1V S^1 is topologically equivalent to a "figure 8", two circles with a common point.
