mass defect

Can someone run me through how to solve a mass defect problem so I can use it in application on my own problem?

You find the total mass before and after some kind of interaction. The difference between the two is the mass defect.

Wouldn't that usually be called the mass deficit?

Your term makes more sense but I believe it's "defect."
