Didn't Pythagoras introduce 666 as the number of the beast according to his numerology cult? We also get the notions of "13" being the unlucky number and "3" being the magic number from the same cult. Most of the number associations didn't make it through to modern culture though.

Well its a subjective text so interpretation is going to determine what direction it is taken. Back in that time, what you need to understand is that the closest thing that even resembled a university was the church, and although they were total #$%#$%, the other option was basically illiterate savages. So it was a safer alternative with the only place books existed.

Marin Mersenne for example was a French minim, and so yes this is why I exclude it from judgement along with political affiliation, you just cannot judge the calibre of the mathematician from their role in other walks of life it simply does not have a causation or even correlation
