Thoughts on lockharts lament? + how do you study math?

http://www.maa.org/external_archive/...artsLament.pdf

It makes a very strong argument that the way math is taught today is terrible, and offers better ways to study math.

Thoughts/opinions on this?? I'm changing the way I study now.

Really? I hadn't noticed that, it looked like it was just information on how better to teach. Did I miss something?

After reading that, I remember my conversation with a student in a school where my teacher training during college took place.

Student: "Why do you like math?"
Me: "Because I think it is like gaming. When we meet a dead-end, we can use different approach."
Student: "You said it's like gaming? But why is it so hard?"
Me: "A game isn't fun unless it is hard, isn't it? "

But maths isn't hard! It's lots of small, easy steps joined together that take you a million miles.

The hard bit is knowing which steps to take so that the million miles you travel actually take you somewhere interesting or useful. But, as in real life, the way to get such knowledge is through the experience of trying it.
