Math saves the day!

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a math experience I had that both saved my family financially AND probably saved the job of a store worker. Here is what happened.

My families finances were VERY tight. My mother came to me and asked if I could use my math skills while she was shopping to make sure she didnt overspend and have enough for savings. I accepted. My idea was to take the prices of objects in the store, add them together, and multiply them by the tax rate to see if we were in budget.

When we went to the cashier to check out, I had the estimated price in my head. To my astonishment, the price rang up as 100 dollars MORE than expected. I checked my calculations, and said, "There must be a mistake somewhere." The cashier let me look at what was rang up. It turns out she accidentally rang up 77 of an item instead of 7, charging an additional 100 dollars. She said, "You were right. sorry about that!" She then adjusted it to 7.

My calculation was then about 51 cents off.

My calculator caught a mistake that the cashier didnt see. I may have saved her job.

Either way, I saved my family from spending an extra 100 dollars we didnt have with my math skills.

Math saves the day!

Jared

That sounds like what a Mathematician would say. It's really a matter of Physics covering all possibilities. In this case, each piece of change is made from an alloy of various metals, which Mathematicians don't consider.

pfffft.

A physicist in this story would have just said 77 ~ 7 ~ 1,000 and bankrupted this poor guy's family. Monster!

I mastered other things but I do math for fun (analysis 1 , calculus 1 ).
It saves the day . Scientists discovered that doing math evolves the way of thinking .
