I want to find free software that can do "things" with "equations". Idk terms that are in use for such things, sorry, but there is what I need: FOR a(x) = 2x^3 + x AND b(a) = a^2 - 3a I want to see the result b(x) = 4x^6 + 4x^4 - 6x^3 + x^2 - 3x (sorted) In addition, all similar terms (if any) grouped, etc etc. please help ty for moving to the subforum I missed to notice. Maxima will do this (but like most symbolic maths software it has a steep learning curve) See the attachment (for a Maxima session being run with the wxMaxima front end).

The maxima site is here

I need program that doesn't rely on any server. Since you know about Maxima, can you tell if there are any program capable to work on thy own(offline)? P.S. The list on wiki doesn't tell me anything, therefore I asking, hoping to save time from trying all from it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...lgebra_systems Last edited by Daughter; November 16th, 2014 at 12:04 AM. Maxima does not, it will run perfectly well without an internet connection. The problem you see is because of the way the default interface access the HTML manual, I believe). Open up the Maxima folder and with luck there will be a wxmaxima sub-folder (I am assuming you are on a Windows box here, not sure where or if it is installed by default in Linux), open it and fire up the wxmaxima executable there, you should have no problems with that (and it is a better interface to Maxima than the default).

Yacas is another CAS system that is free that may do what you want. (You will need to Google for it). You could also try Sage it has Maxima and lots of other mathematical toys built into the default distribution. Xcas will also do what you want. But I find none of these a friendly as Maxima under the wxMaxima interface.
