I am trying to follow a short derivation at the top of page 11 on this PDF: http://www.stanford.edu/class/cs229/not ... notes1.pdf On the 4th line, the y'y term was dropped and I can't explain why. Does anyone see why this term can be dropped?

It's dropped because the derivative with respect to theta of y'y is 0, y does not depend on theta.
