To calculate the determinant of the following matrix, I would like to ask is it possible to eliminate any lines, because I don't see how

1) $\displaystyle \begin{vmatrix}
a & -a & a \\
a & a & -a \\
a & -a & -a

Re: determinant

By subtracting the third row from the second, you have

(0 2a 0) for the second row. Then doing cofactor expansion will be a breeze.
