How to use LATEX

How do you use latex to enter an equation? I can't even do $\displaystyle x^2$.

Latex Help discusses all kinds of equations without ever indicating how they were entered. Is this some kind of "in" thing?

Online tutorials don't help at all.

When I first posted this it wouldn't do x^2. Now it does. Is there a time schedule when LATEX works?

Rarely, I must refresh the page to have the LaTeX render, but I see why this would be on a time schedule.

Ahhhhhh!

$\displaystyle
\begin{matrix}
a & b & c \\
d & e & f \\
g & h & i
\end{matrix}
$

The secret is:
Right click on matrix to see Tex code. To complete it, you have to "wrap" tags around selected code. see $\displaystyle \Sigma$ icon above message box.

I copied/pasted this particular code from wicki LaTex.

When I right-clicked on above matrix I found "\displaystyle" added. Added it to my original code and got:

$\displaystyle
\displaystyle
\begin{matrix}
a & b & c \\
d & e & f \\
g & h & i
\end{matrix}
$

Interesting. Saw it somewhere but don't remember what it does. Will look it up.

$\displaystyle hello world$

Oh well. Rome wasn't built in a day.

$\displaystyle \text{hello world}$

sic transit gloria

When I first previewed code nothing happened- hence above comments. Just before posting I previewed again, and wala. Wish I could remember the quote that goes something like "stranger things than are dreamt of in your philosophy"

EDIT: \displaystyle did it. Which raises the question, should I add it or let MMF do it?

EDIT: Good Grief! Now what happened. All I did was add edit to original post without changing anything and I get dollar signs added to my code. Is this telling me I have to pay? Can't wait to see what happens when I submit this edit.

EDIT: Posted last edit and worked again.

EDIT: Refresh!!! Refresh!!! Just as Hoempa said above. It's not the time after all.

To quote from a movie:

Pain make man think
Thought make man wise
Wisdom make life endurable,

which is wrong on every count, but cute. Take-off from Ecclesiastes.

EDIT: But that means you can't rely on "preview."
"In much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow." Ecclesiastes

iF "preview" post doesn't work, try preview again, "refresh" didn't seem to work in preview mode- gives a warning.

Oh, I recommend:

$\displaystyle y=x^2$
$y=x^2$

Neither of the above in LaTex showed up as rendered equations no matter how often I previewed or refreshed in reply mode
Oh, it's lunchtime.

Exercise in futility,

EDIT: Of course, they work once submitted. So you really don't know till you submit. Didn't work in the edit preview.

When I preview, LaTeX renders. It just takes a few steps.
