When posting lines of simplification or equation using latex, how do I align the lines of simplification or equation in a single column such that the equal signs or arrow signs will be on side- left side ? For example, I want align this:$\displaystyle \frac{2a+b}{a^2-ab}-\frac{2b+a}{ab-b^2} =\frac{2a+b}{a(a-b)}-\frac{(2b+a)a}{b(a-b)} =\frac{(2a+b)b}{ab(a-b)}-\frac{(2b+a)a}{ab(a-b)} =\frac{(2a+b)b-(2b+a)a}{ab(a-b)} =\frac{\cancel{2ab}+b^2-\cancel{2ab}+a^2}{ab(a-b)} =\frac{b^2+a^2}{ab(a-b)}$ Last edited by Chikis; July 8th, 2014 at 03:44 PM.

The star means not to number the equations. There is also the environment aligned, which can be used as a part of a larger formula. For more display math environments, see Wikibooks.

When you were tying to align the line of simplification which I gave as an example, why didn't you surround it by one of these :$...$ or \ [...\ ] or \$...\$,,
