When posting lines of simplification or equation using latex, how do I align the lines of simplification or equation in a single column such that the equal signs or arrow signs will be on side left side ? For example, I want align this:$\displaystyle \frac{2a+b}{a^2ab}\frac{2b+a}{abb^2} =\frac{2a+b}{a(ab)}\frac{(2b+a)a}{b(ab)} =\frac{(2a+b)b}{ab(ab)}\frac{(2b+a)a}{ab(ab)} =\frac{(2a+b)b(2b+a)a}{ab(ab)} =\frac{\cancel{2ab}+b^2\cancel{2ab}+a^2}{ab(ab)} =\frac{b^2+a^2}{ab(ab)}$ Last edited by Chikis; July 8th, 2014 at 03:44 PM.

\begin{align*} \frac{2a+b}{a^2ab}\frac{2b+a}{abb^2} &=\frac{2a+b}{a(ab)}\frac{(2b+a)a}{b(ab)}\\ &=\frac{(2a+b)b}{ab(ab)}\frac{(2b+a)a}{ab(ab)}\\ &=\frac{(2a+b)b(2b+a)a}{ab(ab)}\\ &=\frac{\cancel{2ab}+b^2\cancel{2ab}+a^2}{ab(ab)}\\ &=\frac{b^2+a^2}{ab(ab)} \end{align*} Theoretically, this should be surrounded by [math]...[/math] or \ [...\ ] or \$...\$, (in LaTeX, the environment align* can be used only in math mode), but on the forum it works like this. The star means not to number the equations. There is also the environment aligned, which can be used as a part of a larger formula. For more display math environments, see Wikibooks.

I have no better answer than: the forum software is programmed in such a way as to not require math tags for display equation environments. And that's probably good since it allows users typing less.
