Math Focus: algebra and the calculus
Purpose of remainders?

What is the purpose of remainders in division? For example, 71/5 = 14 R 1, but also 71/5 = 14 + 1/5. Wouldn't the latter equality be more useful for calculations?

Re: Purpose of remainders?

In terms of discrete math, remainders are especially helpful.
Same with computing.

Suppose you are working in a system that only handles integers.
