Proportions

The length of a rectangle envelope is 2 1/2 times it's width. A plastic band surrounds the front and back of the envelope to secure it. The plastic band is 39 3/8 inches long. Find the length and width of the envelope.

Both horizontal and vertical around the envelope.

Plus add'l info: "Both horizontal and vertical around the envelope"

Let width = w; then length = 5w/2

2w + 2(5w/2) = 39 + 3/8 : solve for w
