What does amounts to mean?

If a certain sum of money amounts to Rs 650 in 2 years and Rs 674 in 4 years
Then find the principal sum?

is this question belongs to S.I or C.I ?

Hello. We can answer the question both ways. Did you try simple interest? How far did you get?

The phrase "amounts to" means "produces a total" because interest is added each period. You could also read it as "increases to" or "grows to".
