A merchant uses a 125 cm tape instead of 1 meter tape while buying cloth. While selling he uses a 90 cm tape instead of a meter tape. If he marks up his merchandise by 33.33% and offers a 10% discount while selling. What is his overall profit? Sol: Tape ratio = 125/100 which means 5/4 He uses a 90 cm tape instead of 1 meter tape = 10/9 Mark up by 33.33% = 1/3 ⇒ 1 + 1/3 = 4/3 10% discount = 1 10/100 = 9/10 ⇒ 5/4*10/9*4/3*9/10 = 5/3 (S.P)/(C.P) = 5/3 Profits = (53)/3 = 2/3 Profit% = 2/3*100 = 66.67% How 1/3 in third step? I think you need to stop focusing on the given solutions (and especially any shortcuts), and focus more on solving the problems in a way that makes sense to you. Also, it really seems like you are having trouble understanding mathematical expressions on a conceptual level. You could probably greatly benefit from going back and relearning mathematic basics, not as a set of abstract rules, but as a way of representing reality. [Full disclosure, I have not watched the following videos. My sister swears by this site for relearning things she forgot/struggled with/never covered in high school, however. Use any resource you wish.] https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc...braicthinking https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre...aratiosrates

I got it. 33.33% = (100/3)/100 = 1/3.
