Finance also sometimes uses parentheses for negative values (see Excel formatting). Material science uses overbars for negative vector components in crystal lattice coordinate notation.

The problem is neither of these is universal, and both mean something else in generally accepted generic mathematic notations -- where, as it has been pointed out, negative numbers are often just as real as positive ones.

The "amount owed" argument sounds like something made up by either a banker or a teacher trying to explain negative numbers to grade-schoolers.
