Game score

Devi and Weiming played a game. The ratio of Devi's score to Weiming's score was 2:1

a) What fraction of Devi's score was Weiming's score?

Answer: 1/2 I'm guessing the reason why it's 1/2 and not 2 is because the the "was"?

b) Ann played the same game and the ratio of her score to Weiming's score was 9:5. Express Ann's score as a fraction of the total score of the three children.

Answer: I'm not sure. but I believe Ann scored 9 points and Weiming scored 5 points. Since Devi scored 2 points and Weiming scored 1 point in the beginning, I'm guessing the answer if 9/17?

From a) does it make a difference when it says:
1) "What fraction of Devi's score was Weiming's score => answer: 1/2
2) What fraction of Devi's score to Weiming's score => answer: 2

a) 1/2 is the right answer, if 'to' was used I'd still say 1/2.

b) We cannot state that Ann scored 9 points, she may have scored 18, 27 or 900!
However, we can state that it is a multiple of 9.
So, we can state that Anne score 9k, Weiming scored 5k.
Since the ratio of Devi's score to Weiming's was 2:1, we can state that Devi scored 10k
The total score in therefore 24k, so the fraction of Ann's score to the total is 9/24 (the k's cancel out)

Thank you for the explanation. That helped a lot.

I don't want to ask multiple questions in a thread, but I think I understand why it's 1/2 rather than 2/1. Because it's a fraction?

Examples below:

1) There are 9 boys and 10 girls

a) What is the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls.
Answer: 9: 10

b) What fraction of the number of girls is the number of boys.
Answer: 9/10

for b), the reason why it's not 10/9 is because it's a fraction. So I'm guessing for a fraction (for this case), it's better to put the bigger number in the denominator.

The reason it's half is because it's reasonable to assume the given ratio indicates the order in which the names were mentioned.

The wording is somewhat ambiguous. It could be that Devi and Weiming played against each other, or it could be that they played independently. The latter might be considered more reasonable, as the question doesn't explicitly state that Ann played against one of the other children.

How did RBYRYTBRY "thank" a couple of posts in this thread; he's in banned camp?
