how to simplify this equation?

A problem has been haunting me for a day and half. Can somebody help me please?

How to simplify the equation to i=ax+by? Thanks

I'm afraid you will have to explain your notation. You have what appears to be '*^ followed by 6, 7, and 8. What does that mean?
