What does decimal form mean?

Can anyone explain to me what this means and it would really help if you could show an example of a integer using the decimal form stated below:

Suppose that the integer n is given in decimal form, $n= a_k10^k + a_{k-1}10^{k-1} + \cdots a_110 + a_0$ where $0 \le a_i \le 9$ for all i.

I guess I just don't understand the notation and seeing an example will really help.

Re: What does decimal form mean?

When you write "316", the "3" means 300, the "1" means 10, and the "6" means 6. This can be written 316 = 3*10^2 + 1*10^1 + 6*10^0.

Re: What does decimal form mean?

That's what I thought it was talking about numbers in base 10 but do you have any idea why it is called decimal form? I thought decimals in base 10 would be :

$.23= 2\cdot 10^{-1} + 3 \cdot 10^{-2}$

Re: What does decimal form mean?

Decimal just refers to base 10 notation.

Re: What does decimal form mean?

Decimal notation refers to the base 10 notations.For eg:-

156=1*100+5*10+6=1*10^2+5*10^1+6*10^0

As you see the all numbers are multiplying to the 10 which have some power.This is decimal notation.
