Differentials

Hello forum members.
Can anyone here help me explain this notes?

In equation 145 does it represent a direction (gradient) or is it actually just a slope.

Also how is X'Y'/t, reached in equation 147?
Really need all the help. Please do let me know if u figure it out.Thank you.
