If I had to guess, I'd say it should be:

U_(x²+y)
U_y²

Of course, I could be wrong about this, and I still don't know what it means.

how do you get to put out those fancy scripts? I'd like to be able to do that here so i could post some of my questions clearly.

Some of the scripts are explained in this topic, but I don't know how skipjack made the ∂ symbols (I copied and pasted it).

I used the same principle, but used http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ity_references to find values for further symbols. Note that some symbols may be browser-dependent.
