How close are we to full immersion/deep dive VR?

Will it happen within our lifetime (in 30-70 years)?

By using Elon Musk's Neuralink (Neural Lace 2039???) ,NerveGear, exo-skeletons, Haptic suits maybe?

And if we were to achieve this, would anyone still want to live in the real world apart from people who are maintaining the system and certain religious groups? (or at least take breaks from full dive VR)

And is VR a replacement for reality? As in will people still want to physically travel and go outside?

Not sure whether it will happen this century; however, let's assume for the following that it is possible at some point in the future.

I don't think many would want to stay in there permanently, perhaps towards the end of a person's life, when the real world is no longer comfortable, they might go in full time.
People seek escape from the 'real world' by playing games, taking holidays, reading books etc... If people were to fully immerse all the time, they would need escape from this new reality just as they would the real world.

There are some biological problems to solve with extended use of such technology too.

Of course, there's the doomsday scenario where we all have to fully immerse for our sanity because the Earth has become a wasteland...
