How digital volume work?

Hello
how digital volume work, like in analog there is potentiometer.
how digital volume work??

The volume control is not a potentiometer, it is usually a rotary encoder, basically you get pulses from it when it turns, google them for more information.
A controller of some sort reads the pulses and counts up/down then multiplies the volume level by the outgoing sound.

The sound is represented as numbers which are converted to sound. Before that conversion, we can multiply them by another number, this gives us control of the volume digitally.

There are many ways to do it, it will depend on what hardware and software you have.
Of course, you could also use a digitally controlled potentiometer
