PNG, PDF, and JPEG File Sizes

Does anybody know why Method 1 and Method 2 had a big difference in file size that started from the same PNG file?

Method 1: Converting a 4.5 MB PNG file to PDF made a 4.7 MB PDF

Method 2: Converting a 4.5 MB PNG file to JPEG and then to PDF made a 699 KB PDF, which is about 15 percent of 4.7 MB

JPEG is a highly compressed format, usually with some loss of detail.
