Math Research related to programming!! Help!!

Hi, to all members. I'm a college student and currently doing research proposal for my English subject. The title is "Determine Effective Ways of Teaching Mathematics to the IM student of AUP".
IM student refers to the Information Management course.
AUP refers to the Adventist University of the Philippines.

Do you think if I make a simple calculation test (for example simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division without using calculator) to determine the speed and accuracy of the student in computing, will help the math teachers to determine what is the effective ways to teach this kind of student?

If they are poor in simple calculation, it will affect them in doing the programming. What I mean is the student will have a hardtime in doing programming, because what I belief is poor in Math will also result to poor in programming. In programming, the student should use their logic and many times Mathematics skills will be needed in doing the programming.

Please give your reaction or advise that could help me to conduct the study. I have to defense for this research next week, so I really in hurry.

I will be more appreciate if you can give good advise or sharing another idea.

I think that testing them on basic high school algebra (Algebra I/II) would be better. I don't think that ability on basic arithmetic is strongly correlated with better math ability.

If I'm going to conduct the study by giving the question in form of basic Algebra, do you think it's better forthem not to use any calculator?

From the title itself, when we say determine effective ways, one of the ways is by let every students in the class come to the board(blackboard, etc.) to solve a particular algebra problem.
I'm planning to make an experiment like we give them the pre test in algebra. Next, we will divide them into 2 groups let say A and B. The group A will be given only lecture about the Algebra. Group B will not only be given lecture, but also ask each of them to come to the board to solve a particular problem. After that lecture for how many weeks or months, we will give both group again the post test about basic Algebra. We will compare the increase score of group A and B. From there, the teacher as an educator will know how to teach the student, so the student will increase the capability in Math skills.

Please inform me if this is a good idea, or you might have another solution or clarification.

I think it's a great idea. As for calculators -- I don't see a need for them, but I guess that depends on what they'll be doing. If the real object is programming I wouldn't have them use calculators unless you were having them simulate a run of a computer program (which I probably wouldn't do).
