Can complex numbers and properties of complex numbers be applied in real-world problems? If so, please give an example problem. Also, are there any practical uses for finding the nth roots of unity?

My complex analysis textbook was essentially 'complex analysis for electrical engineers' so it was filled (more than I would have liked!) with real-world applications to electrical systems. Not being an EE I don't feel comfortable trying to reproduce one offhand, but Google should be able to dig up plenty of examples.

Well, probably, but the main reason you're doing it is for practice working with complex numbers rather than because of any special applications of that particular form. It's like learning how to make a mold for a particular shape: sure, that shape might not be useful, but the real skill is making molds in general, which obviously has lots of applications.
