Can complex numbers and properties of complex numbers be applied in realworld problems? If so, please give an example problem. Also, are there any practical uses for finding the nth roots of unity?

There are several applications of complex numbers in science and engineering, in particular in electrical alternating current theory and in mechanical vector analysis.

Well, probably, but the main reason you're doing it is for practice working with complex numbers rather than because of any special applications of that particular form. It's like learning how to make a mold for a particular shape: sure, that shape might not be useful, but the real skill is making molds in general, which obviously has lots of applications.
