Critical Numbers and Extreme Values

Find the critical numbers of f and classify the extreme values.

I have never heard about something like this critical point. Its definition just stupid. A point is a critical point of a function if 1) the function is not derivable in that point or 2) its derivative = 0. It is an exact definition, but why is it worth to introduce such an "artificial" concept? It's like you introduce a name for objects, which either don't exist or they exist and their speed is zero.
