Calculate distance from hypotenuse in right triangle

I'm working on a graphics issue and need some help.

Given a right triangle I want to keep track of x,y coordinates along the hypotenuse after a user draws a line.
The line is 3 pixels wide by default but can be changed. Working with 3 as a start will give me enough to get started.

How do I calculate if a x,y coordinate is within 1.5 units from the hypotenuse on either side? The attached graph is my example.
Every point within the red lines are the points I'm interested in.

Thanks in Advance!!
Russ

Then, if the point in question is less than or equal to 1.5 units from the black line, you will have: $\frac{\|mx_0+b-y_0\|}{\sqrt{m^2+1}}\le1.5$
