The frame is to have a border 3 inches wide surrounding the painting. If the painting is square, what are its dimensions? What are the dimensions of the frame?

Posts: 848 Thanks: 0 Assuming that the 50 inches describes the outer perimeter of the frame, you would divide it by 4 to find the side length of the frame (because the perimeter is formed by 4 sides). Now think about the relationship between the side length of the picture and that of the frame (and don't be afraid to draw a picture).
 June 10th, 2007, 11:43 PM #3 Global Moderator   Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 20,655 Thanks: 2087 Length of side of painting = (length of trim)/4 - 2(border width) = 6 1/2 inches. The frame's interior is 12 1/2 inches square. If you don't understand why, draw an appropriate diagram.
