I don't know what I'm supposed to do - I would be grateful if someone could explain this principle to me

If so, it means that if you'd have an n+1 equations of n+1 variables, an (n+1)*(n+1) system of equations, you'd apply the technique and find an n*n system of equations. Repeatedly apply it to find all variables; until you have a 1*1 system.

Do you know what "the elimination algorithm" means? If you have been given an assignment in which you do not even know the meaning of some of the words, the you had better talk to your teacher about it!
