How many times x^2 goes into 3x^3 Sorry, but can someone please explain to me why x^2 goes into 3x^3 3x times? Another example would be x goes into -2x^2 = -2 I can't understand this. Thanks for any eventual help, Michael Last edited by skipjack; April 24th, 2014 at 06:50 AM.

Because $\displaystyle \frac{3x^3}{x^2}\, = \,3x$.

Not quite: $x$ goes into $-2x^2$ $-2x$ times.
