You are told that "the area of the shaded region is $y= 2x^2- 12x+ 48$" and asked to (i) "find the value of x given that the area of the shaded region is 52 sq cm" and (ii) "given that the area of the shaded region is 1.4". So you want to solve the equations $2x^2- 12x+ 48= 52$ and $2x^2- 12x+ 48= 1.4$. Subtracting 52 from both sides of the first equation you get $2x^2- 12x- 4= 0$ and then divide by 2 to get $x^2- 5x- 2= 0$. Solve that quadratic equation. The second equation is equivalent to $x^2- 6x+ 23.3= 0$. Solve by completing the square or by the quadratic formula.

However, it appears from the diagram that the shaded area cannot exceed 48 cm². (c)(ii) You should be able to evaluate (2x² - 12x + 4 cm² for x = 1.4.
