Q: A hall is twice as long as it is wide. A 2m wide veranda runs round the hall. If the area of the hall plus the veranda is 112m, find the area of the veranda. Thanks for your help!

Since the length is twice the width, y = x/2. The veranda is 2m wide. The total area is 112m. This gives the equation $$$\frac x2\,+\,4$$\(x\,+\,4)\,=\,112$ The area of the veranda is then $112\,-\,\frac{x^2}{2}$

That would be an error anyway, as the units should be m². What textbook is it?
