Hi everyone, I am struggling to work out the equation for this word problem. Q: A hall is twice as long as it is wide. A 2m wide veranda runs round the hall. If the area of the hall plus the veranda is 112m, find the area of the veranda. Thanks for your help!

Let x be the length of the hall and y be the width. Since the length is twice the width, y = x/2. The veranda is 2m wide. The total area is 112m. This gives the equation The area of the veranda is then

You sure the area is 112, Doc? Would be "nicer" if 96 or 126

Yep, I've doublechecked my textbook and it is 112m.

In that case, the answer is: Just solve the quadratic in x above.
