You know that there is an invisible 2 within every square root. Which is why an exponent let's say...x^2 is canceled out when squared. ? x^2 = x However, when there is a value greater than two the index is shown. Both sections of the problem is a cubed root which is why the 3 is there. [color=#FF0000]3^ ? 54xy^3 - y 3^ ? 128x [/color] 3 is the index of the root, making it a cubed root. Yes, the 3 at the start of the problem is effecting the entire problem. The other 3 in the first section of the problem is an exponent of y. Brackets aren't needed for this problem if they were there they would confuse you even more. This problem comes straight out of my text book. I've been told the steps are as follows. 3^ ? 54xy^3 - y 3^ ? 128x = 3^ ? (27*2)xy^3 - y 3^ ? (27*4)x = 3y 3^ ? 2x - 3y 3^ ? 4x [color=#0000FF]= 3y (3^ ? 2x - 3^ ? 4x)[/color] Is the last equation correct? Or is it something else? Please help, I need the answer.
