A shopkeeper sells an article at a discount of 25% on the Marked price and makes a profit of 20% If the selling price of the article is Rs 7200, then how much discount should he offer on the marked price to make a profit of 28%? Solution: Let cp=100, sp=120 then mp=160 1207200 160 cp=6000 sp=7200 mp=9600 New sp=60*128=7680 DISCOUNT =96007680=1920 My doubts: Why we need to derive two extra SP's i.e 120 and 7680 for this problem ? How MP = 9600 is obtained? Last edited by skipjack; June 29th, 2018 at 06:45 AM.

As the Rs 7200 price = MP(1 25/100), MP = Rs 7200(1 25/100) = Rs 9600. For a 28% profit, SP = Rs 7200(1 + 28/100)/(1 + 20/100) = Rs 7680, so the discount is now Rs (9600 7680) = Rs 1920, which is 20% of the MP.
