Actually, if I were your teacher and you wrote "a = alex b = bryan c = calvin" I would have corrected you (though probably not deducting any points). The problem asks you to find the number of stamps each boy has. a, b, and c are numbers, not people. You should say "Let a be the number of stamps Alex has, b the number of stamps bryan had, and c the number of stamps Calvin has. I might also have pointed out that you should have used capital letters for the boy's names.
