Can't get my head around this

Hey, I know this is pretty basic algebra, but can somebody explain this question in the simplest of form for me? I can't seem to grasp algebra. I have the answer, I just don't know how to work it out.

thanks

Math Focus: Yet to find out.
Do you know what it means to take the average of two numbers?

Try writing down the average of both cases separately, and then compare, do you notice anything?

I know how to work out the average of something. I feel like a complete idiot with this though.

I think I have finally worked it out, many thanks though.
