Exponent Property question

How do you get $\displaystyle (a^{n})^{1 \over m}$ as the final product?

$\displaystyle a^{n \over m} = (a^{1 \over m})^{n}=(a^{n})^{1 \over m}$

$\dfrac{n}{m} = \dfrac{1}{m} \cdot n = n \cdot \dfrac{1}{m}$

Fairly basic property of multiplication ... where does the confusion lie?
