In a survey at a local university, 24% of students say that they get less than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. In a group of
2900 students, how many would you expect get eight or more hours of sleep per night?

I do not understand word problems, I have a test coming up and Need help solving .... Thank you !!

If 24% of the student population gets less than 8 hrs of sleep, what percentage of the student population would get 8 or more hours of sleep?

Total Students = 2,900
% of non-sleeping students= 24%
% of sleeping students = 100% - % of non sleeping students.

Total sleeping students = Total Students * % of sleeping students (converted in decimal).

% Conversion in decimal is easy. 100% is 1.00 ; 90% is 0.90. 80% is 0.80. 65% is 0.65 (you get the feel)

So the total student population is 2900. 24% do not get the recommended amount. 24% is 0.24. To calculate the number of students, multiply 2900 by 0.24. That is 696 students who do not get the recommended amount. Subtract 696 from 2900. That means 2204 students do get the recommended amount.

Or, 100%-24% is 76%, or 0.74 in decimal. 2900 times 0.74 is 2204.

OK. You are following the logic, which is the main point of math, but how did you go from 76% to 0.74? A lot of the rest of math is just being careful.

Equivalently, since 24% of 2900 students get less than eight hour sleep, (0.24)(2900)= 696 get less than eight hours of sleep. That leaves 2900- 696= 2204 who get 8 hours or more sleep.
