This is driving me crazy and it's a short drive at that. The question is that a woman's age at death is 1/29 of the year of her birth. How old was she in 1982? I have tried using multiples of 29, but wind up with outrageous dates. Could you give me a hand please? Thanks.

I'm sure someone around here knows some fancy equation for figuring this out but it's not that hard manually. You just weren't patient enough. By weird coincidence I found one of the two answers on the first try. I was trying to set up an equation (that didn't work) and I just picked a year for birth randomly just to "picture" what was going on. It didn't divide by 29 evenly so I just changed it to the closest number that did, and it happened to be one of the answers. LOL. But then I did what you did: started finding multiplies of 29. That does work... you'd have to try some random ages, and narrow it from there. Anything under 65 is ridiculously too early, and anything as high as 70 is ridiculously too high. Doesn't take long to figure that out and narrow it down. The only reasonable ages are 66 68. Go from there. One doesn't allow her to live to 1982. The other two do, so both work. My accidental method actually worked to my advantage, the reason being is that I picked a birth year that was already reasonable and would allow her to be alive in 1982. Like just pick 1960. 1960/29 = 67.586.... Round it down or up to an integer. There you go.

She must have been alive in 1982. The first multiple of 29 after 1982 is 2001. She must have died in 2001 'cause 2030 isn't here yet. Since 69*29 = 2001, she was 69 in 2001, the year of her death. 20011982=19 19 years before her death at age 69 Therefore she was 50 years old in 1982. oh shoot... I think I did 1/29 the year of her death.

well the first multiple of 29 before 1982 is 1972 68*29=1972 so she was born in 1972 and lived to 68 years old...impossible 2040 isn't here yet if she was born in 1943 she died at age 67 in 2010 which makes her 39 in 1982 if she was born in 1914 she died at age 66 in 1980...impossible since she had to be alive in 1982

More to the point, we need to know if this woman is still alive. We could just call her, then.
