A fish was caught whose tail weighed 9 lbs, its head weighed as much as its tail plus half its body. Its body weighed as much as its head and tail. What did the fish weigh? Any help and explanation would be great.

Write out what you know, and what you don't! Tail = 9 Head = Tail + (1/2)*Body , so Head = 9 + (1.2)*Body Body = Head + Tail Body = 9 + (1/2)*Body + 9 You should be able to solve that last one, then use the result to find the Head and Tail

That's what we are not understanding is how to solve the last one, there are too many variables.

The last equation has only 1 variable...Body. Gather like terms, then solve.

Now don't leave just yet...what we have is: Body = 9 + (1/2)*Body + 9 Gather like terms on the right, then subtract (1/2)*Body from both sides: (1/2)*Body = 18 Multiply both sides by 2: Body = 36

Got it, Body=9+9+half body, we have 18 already which is the other half of the body, 9+9+18=36 Body=36 Head= 9+18=27 tail=9 Fish = 72lbs Wow it's been way to long for me....
