How Colleges Treat Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus

Does anybody know whose idea it was to make two AP Calculus exams and name them AB and BC? Why not just name them A and B? At Hofstra University, a 3 on the AB exam gives you credit for Basic Calculus, which is for non-majors and meets for fewer hours than Analytic Geometry and Calculus I. A student with credit for Basic Calculus who needs Analytic Geometry and Calculus II must take the 1 credit course Bridge to Calculus II. A 4 or 5 on the AB exam or a 3 on the BC exam gives you credit for Analytic Geometry and Calculus I. A 4 or 5 on the BC exam gives you credit for Analytic Geometry and Calculus I and Analytic Geometry and Calculus II.
