Accredited graduate programs in mathematics

I am currently a senior in mathematics and I am close to graduating. I created a list of prospective graduate schools with master's and doctoral programs and it has 14 schools so far.

Is it important for a graduate school to have an accredited graduate program or be an accredited graduate school?

If so, how can I check to see if a graduate school has an accredited graduate program?

Yes, it is very important that a graduate program be accredited! If you have a degree from a school that is not accredited, any degree you get is likely to be ignored. Pretty much any well known or state college is likely to be accredited- but you can always ask which accrediting organization accredits the school (typically that is given in the school handbook)- and then check with the accrediting organization to verify that.

If they're not accredited, they're hardly a university at all! I've never checked on a school's accreditation status before, though, because any that I would apply to would 'obviously' be accredited.
