Failing my math class and I don't know what to do!

I'm a 23 year old college student and I'm failing my pre-algebra class for the third time in a row. I'm so frustrated and upset that I don't know what to do! I've tried everything I possibly can but nothing seems to be helping me! My teacher in my current class even handed me my exam today and said "you'll get it eventually." which made me really upset as well! I'm also a straight A and B student in other subjects but I just always do horrible in math.

I just don't know what to do anymore and I'm nearly crying right now because I'm so upset! There is no possible chance for me to pass my current class right now as I've done so bad on current three tests that I would have to get every single question right on the 4th test and the final for me to pass which is nearly impossible! I'm so angry I don't know what to do! I think there is something wrong with me because I just can't understand math no matter how hard I try!

This is my last chance to pass the class. I will have to go to another school to take the class if I fail, which is what it looks like is going to happen. I've read about math anxiety and everything like that and I've read math strategy books and have done everything they say and I'm still failing my class. I don't even know how I can find out if I do have some type of learning disability. If I could only pass my pre-algebra class and the algebra class I have to take after I can finally graduate, but with my failing my third time in pre-algebra it feels like I'm never going to be able to graduate. I just feel like giving up on school altogether!

Re: Failing my math class and I don't know what to do!

The first thing to do is not panic. Panicking will get you nowhere. The next thing to do is figure out what you need to do and what you can do (I'm not talking about tests here, I'm talking about the whole situation.)
That second step will probably take a while, so while you're doing it, you need to find someone who can figure out what specifically you're having trouble with, and help you with those specifics. I'm convinced that no one is incapable of learning math...

I would be willing to help you, but the internet is a poor medium for this sort of help. Also, I don't think doing it over this forum is the best way. If you'd like me to try to help (finding a tutor in real life would be better) then send me a private message with the class syllabus.

Hello there,

If you are failing pre-algebra class a few times, then you probably want to seek for some help.
Well, as for me, it's like saying: johnny failed American Literature for three years and he thus seeks for help, therefore he passes. lol

Re: Failing my math class and I don't know what to do!

I've just now found this page, so sorry my response is a little late, but I'm hoping to get some feedback as well! I have a very good GPA, went from being an English Major into Early Childhood Education. However, I attended a tiny christian school with a poor education. I'm starting back to school later in life, but love it.....Except for math. I'm almost ready to graduate except I put math until last, avoiding it. The first class I took a few years back, my daughter was in Iraq and a bad accident happened. I remember leaving the class crying and never talked to my professor.....Very stupid, I know.....And got a d+. Last semester I took a night course, two nights a week and it moved so fast my head was spinning. I had to drop it! This semester I enrolled in the class four days a week, but it's still only a four month class, and I'm already just under a c! I've enrolled in special programs for anxiety, getting extra testing time.....The tutoring is horrible so I avoid it, as I get good help at home. I still struggle and panic! When I say I study, I'm talking 3-4 hours in an evening! I'm still not getting it, and I feel my professors don't understand why people like me find math difficult, therefore I leave feeling stupid. They've now passed that law where after taking a math class three times, you have to go to a different school for that class. I think that's where I'm headed! Has anyone had an experience close to this that could offer any advice? I excel in ever subject but this one, and it's frustrating. I have until April 21ST to drop it without a drop on my record, and will wait as close as I can before deciding, in case something clicks and I can pass. I wish I could find a school that offered this class.....Pre-Algebra over two semesters. Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thank you so much

Re: Failing my math class and I don't know what to do!

sounds like you have an anxiety problem more then a math problem.

If it gets bad enough, I would suggest going for exercice... This has always helped me.

For the math part, there's usually a few key concepts to understand but then the exams are easy. Analyze what you are doing?
