Getting the most out of lecture

I love mathematics, but I feel like I am never getting that much out of lecture. Especially in Calculus 2 now. I don't know what it is, but I just can't keep up well. My brain is like always trying to fully understand everything he does and then sometimes I fall behind and then lose the professor completely. I can't imagine trying to follow him when we do infinite series. I usually go home and read the textbook and understand the example problems and then do problems. But I feel like I could have done that easily without lecture. Anyway, to get the most out of my education, what should I be doing differently to get the most out of lecture periods? I would really appreciate some tips.

Thanks a lot!

I had this Spanish guy who was teaching everyone an advanced quantum mechanics and it was impossible to understand him. To get through that, I

1. made sure I wrote down everything and compared my notes to my friend's
2. got a textbook and read that instead

Aside from that there's not a huge amount you can do.

Read the next day's material in advance. Then you can follow without falling behind. You may not even need to take notes. Plus you can more confidently ask questions.

Read ahead of the lecture.
