Research papers in college math courses?

Do any college math courses for math majors at the undergrad level typically assign written research papers? (in-text citations, works cited page, etc)

Hofstra University requires Mathematics majors to do one of these:

1. Write an Honors Thesis
2. Take Mathematics 100, which is a 1 credit course titled "Communicating Mathematics." Here is the course description:

"For mathematics majors, to be taken in the fall of their senior year. The course will be an independent study to train students for oral presentations in mathematics. The course culminates in an oral presentation of a college-level mathematics topic (determined by student and instructor) during an end of the semester presentation event with students in all sections of the course, their guests and mathematics professors."

Earlier in the 2000s, Mathematics 100 did not exist.

Do you mean assign papers for the student to study? Or assign writing one as a task (as EvanJ has answered)?

Since the former case doesn't make much sense, I'm guessing you meant the latter...
