Hello Guys,

Me safia & doing BCA last semester from Gulzar Group of Institutes & mathematics is main subject in it...One question always arise in my mind "Why Mathematics is too difficult for every student?" Why this subject is not easy like other subjects?? Share with me your opinions..

IMO, mathematics is easier than other subjects. What do you actually think is tough? Everything under pre-calc level (considering differential calculus in it) is pretty easy though!

When I was in,math textbooks were terse, they sometime assume a body of knowledge that I didn`t have. They also do not always explain the jump from one statements to another and so I had to figure it out myself.

In my book, you really had to internalize the material while other subjects not so much.

Proofs are tough.

But then again I was really a lousy student. I generally dug reading history though, so maybe if I had as much passion for maths as I did for history I would have turned out better.

Re: Why Mathematics is too difficult??

Hello. My name is Long Quach. I just joined this forum 15 minutes ago, coming from the Origami Forum.

To an answer you question it's very, very simple. I use math in origami, so my math skills are solid. It's applications you can see and touch with your every own hands.

The math you learn in text books are mumbo jumbo. It's not tied anything to the real world. I just randomly pick up a post here: Can anybody explain what the hell that equation is describing in the real world? Who came up with that equation? How and why?

Get my drift?

Perhaps we've read different text books, but I find it is logically and beautifully developed, and makes perfect sense, quite different from "mumbo jumbo."

The post you randomly picked comes from the study of a projectile launched at some angle h above the horizontal, and gives the height of the projectile at time t, where the only force acting upon it is that of gravity. If you take the time to follow its derivation, you will see how it follows from a few simple rules. It is every bit as "hands on" as folding paper.

What does that show other than different ways to view a problem? You post your method and let others post theirs.

Math is a notation and language for solving problems. One of the confusing things is the use of words that are familiar in one language may have a different but very precise meaning in mathematics.
For example, an improper fraction is not improper because it is naughty. And a right angle may not be the correct one. It is confusing when we impose the language we know on the math language we are trying to understand.

Since it is a language, math needs to be learned like a language - by regular and varied usage. Languages build on themselves as does math. That's why the problems in a textbook are called exercises.

Skipping the chapter on learning English verbs starting with "s" means you won't understand the difference between "That camel will sit" and "That camel will spit". Don't blame the camel for the mess you are in. It's all about communication.

It takes reading practice to be able to read and enjoy a great book. Likewise, it takes practice to be able to see all that is said in even the shortest math statement.
Earth shaking books have been written on the meaning of e=mc^2. If a picture is worth a thousand words, an equation can be worth a thousand pictures.

Likewise, have faith in yourself that with practice comes understanding. What was impossible to see yesterday will become simple and clear with work. There is no predicting the moment. One more exercise and then aha! you see it. A student who does not have faith in the process may give up before the aha! moment.

Again math is a shorthand notation and language for solving problems...and everybody has problems.
