Constructing Mathematical Equations

For a long time I've been fascinated with the beauty of math equations and formulas. Maybe this is more of a topic in number theory but I would like to learn and deconstruct how math formulas and equations are made. Is it about pattern recognition? Notations on when to use square roots, multiplications, divisions, etc?

I'm hoping anyone on this forum can guide me on what books or references I should use to learn these techniques?

Thanks!

Math Focus: Yet to find out.
Phew. This is quite a broad question. Math is a bit like a pyramid... each block builds on each other and without the foundational or preceding blocks (the base of the pyramid say), it becomes increasingly hard to progress.

So I suppose the question is, what sort of mathematics do you currently understand ? Highschool level? College?

From here people will be able to recommend you material that's at your current level, and with this you can progress further and discover new fields of math which might interest you.

I understand Calculus, well the rules for derivatives anyway. I'm pretty much starting back to HS Algebra just to refresh what I've learn from the past and work my way up to Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. All resources from all levels would be great so I'll be prepared with future references.
