Step-by-step mathematics software/practice problems

I used course compass/my math lab and I really enjoyed it. It provided

-randomly generated practice problems that gave me the right answer when I got it wrong
-explained how to do the problems step by step.
-gave me examples of problems with their solutions, and how they were done.

Is there any software that provides this sort of help? I want to use course compass /my math lab as a study supplement but I have to be an educator/instructor in order to create my own course. I would take the course itself through course compass/my math lab but I'll be working a full time job and I want a university that gives me more time to complete the work (this is why I'm taking it online at the University of North Dakota, which gives you 9 months to complete each class).

Is there some way to get an extension on course compass/my math lab, or take courses that give you a much longer time to complete the course? That'd also solve my problem, lol

I saw something at the 2012 JMM that looked like it might be what you want. I can't think of the name immediately, but I'll look it up for you if you like. But what are you studying, precisely? This program that I saw (free, BTW) focused on introductory algebra, through quadratics and the like I think, so if you're studying something else it might not be helpful.

I'm studying college algebra though I plan on majoring in mathematics.

The software I was talking about is
http://www.xyalgebra.org/

I talked to Dr. Miller about it when I met him last month. It looks interesting, maybe you should try it. I don't know if the level is appropriate. (I assume by "college algebra" you mean the 1-semester course that reviews the two years of high-school algebra, rather than an introduction to abstract algebra / abstract algebra / abstract algebra II class that is about groups, rings, and fields.)
